As digital movie distribution channels have diversified and gained their power over the traditional box-office, there have been heated arguments around the impact of the digital movie release on the traditional theatrical revenue. This study focuses on examining whether the early home digital releases have a negative influence on the box-office revenue in the Korean movie market. We analyze the box-office data of Korea provided by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) and VOD sales data from a domestic home video provider from January 2015 to December 2018 using the difference-in-difference (DD) method. Our results show that the availability of SPVOD does not harm the theatrical performance, yet rather has a significantly positive impact. Moreover, this positive impact of SPVOD on the theatrical performance does not notably vary by movie-specific characteristics such as review, genre, rating, and studio. With a thorough descriptive analysis on the VOD sales of SPVOD offered titles, we observe an economically significant increase in overall total sales of movies in both theater and VOD channel when SPVOD is available.
최근 영화의 배급 채널이 TV, 온라인 등 다양해지면서 영화의 디지털 개봉이 전통적인 오프라인 극장 수익에 미치는 영향에 대한 열띤 논쟁이 벌어지고 있다. 본 연구는 극장동시상영 VOD의 출시가 극장에서의 흥행 및 수익에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 확인하였다. 2015년 1월부터 2018년 12월까지 국내에 개봉한 영화들에 대해 한국 영화 진흥위원회 (KOFIC)에서 제공한 박스오피스 데이터와 국내 IPTV 콘텐츠 제공 업체의 VOD 판매 데이터를 Difference -in-difference 기법을 활용해 분석했다. 분석 결과, 극장동시상영 VOD 의 출시는 극장에서의 성과에 해를 끼치지 않고, 오히려 유의미한 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 이러한 긍정적 영향은 리뷰, 장르, 관람등급, 제작사와 같은 영화 특유의 특성에 따라 달라진다. 또한, 극장동시상영 VOD가 제공되는 영화의 VOD 매출에 대한 분석을 통해 극장동시상영 VOD의 출시는 극장과 VOD 채널 전체에서 발생하는 영화 관련 총 매출을 유의미하게 증가시키는 것을 확인하였다.
