Tail risk and its compensation have been considered as a separate type of problem from diffusive risk. From the dot-com bubble burst to the recent Covid-19 market crash, the series of tail events in history made a huge impact on the Korean stock market. Bollerselv and Todorov(2011) invented a non-parametric approach using high-frequency futures and shortest-maturity OTM option data to research the tail risk and its risk premia. This paper utilized this method to investigate the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on the KOSPI 200 market. The empirical results suggest that the occurrence of the extreme tail events could explain a significant portion of equity and variance risk premium at the time. In addition, by using the jump tail structure and pricing, this study computes the KOSPI 200 Fear Index, which measures the magnitude of the investor’s fear over the market history. The estimation of the expected value of jump tails for each probability measure, P and Q, is based on Extreme Value Theory with highfrequency1-minute futures and daily shortest maturity OTM option data.
