In this study, separating the Korean stock market into the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets, I investigate whether the co-movement of liquidity risk and the corresponding impact on the KOSPI market, which is relatively more influenced by institutional investors than the KOSDAQ market, are evident by checking the time series correlation of extreme liquidity risk and liquidity commonality. I also find that extreme liquidity risk served as an advance warning for the liquidity dry-up events in the past Korean stock market to some degree. In addition, unlike the KOSDAQ market where the results are not statistically significant, I find that stocks with high extreme liquidity risk beta show excess monthly returns of 1.39% adjusted for the liquidity level premium, Fama & French three factors, and the momentum factor when compared to those with low extreme liquidity risk beta in the KOSPI market.
