Online social media has allowed for the active communication of people worldwide and the rapid spread of awareness on various social issues like climate change. While it may seem that people are more connected and committed to those matters, some have criticized that online social actions deliver little meaningful impact. The focus of the present research is to analyze the conditions in which people act in a consistent matter both online and offline. In particular, depending on how disconnected people’s online and offline identities are, they will either intend to act consistent or inconsistent. Through one study it was confirmed that people who construe their online and offline selves differently, in other words, have different identities, their online and offline actions are less likely to be consistent. This inconsistency was attenuated by tying those identities through a common relatable issue that lowers psychological distance towards a target.
인터넷 소셜 네트워크의 발달은 사람들이 기후변화나 환경문제 등과 같은 다양한 사회 문제에 대한 의견을 보다 많은 대중과 공유하고 인식 제고의 확산을 가능케 했다. 본 연구는 이러한 환경 속에서 사람들의 온라인과 오프라인 행동의 일관성이 이어지는 조건을 살펴보았다. 친 사회적 행태 일관성을 살펴본 선행연구는 인상 관리 차원에서 주로 접근해왔다. 사람들은 사회적 상호작용을 통해 사회적 자기정체성을 형성하고 자신이 속한 조직의 규범에 따라 행동하려는 속성이 있다. 본 연구는 사람들이 온라인과 오프라인에서 형성하는 사회적 자기정체성에 따라 다르게 행동하려는 의도를 가짐을 주장한다. 온라인과 오프라인에서의 자기정체성이 불일치 되는 사람일 수록 행태의 일관성 의도가 떨어지는 것을 실험을 통해 확인하였다. 또한, 일치되지 않은 자기정체성으로 인한 비일관적인 행태 의도를 조절하는 역할로써 심리적 거리감을 제시한다. 온라인과 오프라인 자기정체성이 비교적 불일치 될 수록, 특정 대상과의 심리적 거리가 가까운 경우 행태 일관성 의도가 증가함을 증명했다.
