Climate change is now recognized as the major risk factor worldwide, and the firms are facing some pressure from various stakeholders to disclose the climate change information. Most of the climate change information disclosure is now voluntarily done by the firms themselves, not mandated by governmental regulations, thus the decision whether to voluntarily disclose this information differs from each firm. In this thesis, I hypothesized that the CEO’s educational backgrounds are the one that can explain this difference. Using Korean firm data, I tested the hypotheses by examining firms’ responses to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). The results show that Korean firms led by CEOs with higher level of education, degree from abroad, engineering major are more likely to participate in climate change disclosure than are other firms, but less likely to participate when led by social science major CEOs than are other firms. This thesis contributes to the literature by extending the Korean literature on CER activities, and by suggesting CEO’s educational background as one of the explanatory variables for Korean firm’s climate change related strategic decision.
기후변화는 현재 세계적인 위험요인으로 인식되고 있으며, 기업들은 다양한 이해관계자들로부터 기후변화 관련 정보를 공시하라는 압력을 받고 있다. 기후변화 관련 공시는 현재 대부분 법률에 의해 강제되는 것이 아니라 기업들이 자발적으로 참여하고 있어, 이 정보를 자발적으로 공시하는지 여부는 회사마다 차이를 보인다. 이 논문에서는 그 차이가 대표이사의 교육적 배경에 의해 설명될 수 있을 것으로 판단하여 가설을 세웠으며, 한국 기업 데이터와 탄소정보 공개 프로젝트(CDP) 참여 여부를 활용하여 가설을 검증하였다. 그 결과, 대표이사가 고학력인 경우, 해외에서 학위를 취득한 경우, 공학계열을 전공한 경우 그렇지 않은 경우보다 기후변화 공시에 참여할 가능성이 더 높았으며, 대표이사가 사회계열을 전공한 경우 그렇지 않은 경우보다 공시에 참여할 가능성이 더 낮았다. 본 논문은 기업의 환경적 책임에 관한 한국 문헌을 확장하였고, 한국 기업의 기후변화 관련 자발적 공시 여부가 대표이사의 교육적 배경에 의해 설명될 수 있음을 보였다는 점에서 기여하였다.
