We studied the effect of microchannel materials on the apparent viscosity of silicone oils and glycerol-water mixtures using two different experiments: rheometer and pressure drop measurement along microchannels. The first approach was a direct measurement of the apparent viscosity on PDMS, glass, and steel substrates using a rheometer. Then, we measured the pressure drop of test liquids along microchannels made of PDMS, glass, and steel while the flow rate was controlled by the syringe pump. The apparent viscosity was calculated from the measured pressure drop using a theoretical model. In both experiments, we found the apparent viscosity of silicone oils on PDMS materials is higher than glass and steel materials by 10 mPa·s and 40 mPa·s for 100 cSt and 500 cSt silicone oils respectively. In contrast, the apparent viscosity of glycerol-water mixtures shows insignificant deviation on PDMS channels compared to other materials. These results show that the deviation of the apparent viscosity of silicone oils in PDMS materials cannot be neglected especially for applications where the conventional microfluidic channels are made of PDMS and the silicone oils are used as a working fluid. Finally, we also observed this similar effect from the spreading droplet experiment of silicone oil on different substrate materials. The result shows that a silicone-oil droplet slowly spreads on PDMS substrates compared to the steel and glass substrates. In conclusion, our experimental results suggest that silicone oils and PDMS are interacting in a peculiar way which should be explored further in the near future.
