In order to reduce the bezel of mobile devices, researches are being actively conducted to generate tactile and auditory outputs by attaching an exciter to a display. The display excitation technology is capable of generating local vibrations, providing a high sense of immersion to the user through tactile rendering and sound spatiality. Previous studies have been conducted to traditional voice coil actuators and piezoelectric actuators. These have good output power, but difficult to apply to mobile devices as they are thick and heavy. Therefore, in this study, an electrostatic panel that can have the advantage of thin and light is to be dealt with. In this study, a predictable model of a conventional electrostatic panel composed of a single electrode was constructed in the frequency domain through mathematical modeling and FEM simulation. Moreover, the FEM simulation of multiple electrodes electrostatic panel was performed. Based on this, an optimization methodology for generating local vibration was suggested, and finally, a 174mm x 250mm tablet size actuator was fabricated to verify the method.
