When the adhesive pillar is detached from the substrate, initial crack starts at the edge because of the stress singularity, which leads to a rapid detachment. If a relatively soft material is added to the tip of the pillar, stress singularity is reduced and the performance of the adhesive pillar is enhanced. By varying the interface geometry of the soft tip layer, different composite pillars with different performances are created. In this thesis, we calculated the singularity and performance scores of the full detachment process on different geometry of the soft tip layer using FEA simulation and predicted using machine learning. Using the trained machine learning model, we proposed an optimized composite adhesive pillar geometry using genetic algorithm and generative inverse design method.
