The demand for gas sensors is increasing because of various hazards that are caused by chemical gas leaks and exhaust gases, and growing interest in monitoring indoor/outdoor air pollutions. In particular, small-sized, low-cost, and highly sensitive semiconductor gas sensors are attracting attention as the next-generation gas sensors, but there have been limitations in practical applications because of their critical disadvantage: low selectivity. Nowadays, various studies have been conducted to solve these low selectivity problems of semiconductor gas sensors, and the method of implementing selective gas detection through multi-sensor-based electronic nose systems is in the limelight. However, the limitations that the accuracy of the identification of the gas species will be significantly reduced when the performance of the sensors is not uniform, and it is difficult to implement selective gas detection in real-time, have yet to be solved.
In this study, these problems could be solved by fabricating uniform gas sensor arrays and applying the sensing data from the sensor arrays to the deep learning network. The fabricated gas sensors used porous metal oxide nanofilms with high batch uniformity deposited through the glancing angle deposition (GLAD) as the sensing materials, and four types of metal oxides (SnO$_2$, In$_2$O$_3$, WO$_3$, and CuO) were used in this study. High-temperature conditions required for a gas detection of the semiconductor gas sensors was satisfied by utilizing a suspended microheater platform. Also, it was possible to verify the uniform gas sensing performance by utilizing the gas sensors as a sensor array and fabricating a sensor array integration module. Finally, a real-time selective gas detection for CO, NH$_3$, NO$_2$, CH$_4$, and C$_3$H$_6$O gases was achieved with an accuracy of 98% by applying preprocessed sensing data, which was collected from both the gas sensor arrays with and without Au nanoparticle decoration, to the convolutional neural network.
