Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) have continually proven their effectiveness in inspecting massive structures, difficult for humans to reach. However, maintenance, such as fixing or cleaning, is an area that is yet to be conquered by UAVs. This paper proposes a novel design of a coaxial hexarotor (Y6) with a tilt-rotor mechanism that can morph mid-air while hover, changing the flight stage from a horizontal to a vertical orientation and vice versa, thus allowing wall interaction maneuvers. Tilting rotors are located at a certain distance from the tilting axle. This configuration reduces the required distance between the wall and the drone. Thus, the entire system is more balanced since the heavy end effector is located closer to the drone’s center. Additionally, since GNSS is denied near the massive structure, a proper localization system is also required. In this paper, a visual-inertial localization method performed on the glass wall's surface is proposed and validated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that shows a drone that utilizes a rotor offset that enables close contact interactions with any surface, which enhances the overall flight stability, thus broadening its application areas.
