This study examines the changing status of TV as an influencer of scientific literacy. Although TV has been a catalyst of rendering popular knowledge of science in the past half century, TV viewership plummeted with the rise of their migration to YouTube. By exploring the content produced in the rubric of science and technology and distributed via YouTube, this study articulates implications in the epoch of TV. To this end, 176 popular content videos of YouTube broadcast in the first half of 2020 were selected as samples for this study. The selection of videos was based on the viewers of the top 30 TV channels on science and technology. The study classified the contents into three types, the critical, the active, and the explanatory, which is determined by the context and activities of science and technology. It employed methods of multiple case studies and content analysis. The results of the study provide ground for an accurate understanding of the Korean-based YouTube science and technology contents and provide the first clue to the understanding Korean public‘s understanding of science through YouTube
본 연구에서는 지난 반세기 동안 과학 대중화를 위한 커뮤니케이션의 첨병 역할을 해왔던 TV의 위상이 급격히 추락하고, 이탈한 시청자들이 유튜브로 이동하는 현재, 유튜브를 통해 과학기술이라는 이름으로 제작 유통 소비되는 콘텐츠들은 어떤 메시지를 전달하고 있으며, 그것은 TV 시대의 메시지와 어떻게 다른가를 탐구한다. 이를 위해 TV 과학 프로그램으로는 2020년 상반기에 방송된 <신기한 과학나라>(tvN)와 <뇌로 보는 인간>(EBS) 시리즈를, 유튜브 콘텐츠로는 한국어 기반 과학기술 카테고리 구독자 순 상위 30개 채널의 인기 동영상 176 편을 선정, 과학기술의 맥락과 활동에 따라 비평형, 활동형, 해설형으로 분류한 후 다중사례연구와 내용분석을 실시하였다. 이를 통해 한국어 기반 유튜브 과학기술 콘텐츠에 대한 전반적인 이해를 제공하고, 유튜브를 통해 진행되고 있는 한국대중의 과학이해에 대한 이해의 첫 단초를 제공하고자 한다.
