News articles influence the public understanding and awareness of science and technology. As interests in artificial Intelligence (AI) increase, the number of articles on AI are also increasing. This study aims to analyze the trends of articles on AI reported in major Korean news media outlets and to examine which topics have been addressed as compared to the global AI ethics guidelines, with a focus on ethical issues. Database was built by web crawling from the four major Korean news media outlets (i.e. Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, Hankyoreh, and Kyunghyang Shinmun) with the search terms of artificial intelligence or AI in articles titles, from the date of the inception of each media outlet to 2019. After then, articles on AI ethics were extracted through keywords search as well as manual selection. The data of all the articles on AI were analyzed using descriptive statistics and corpus analysis while the data of articles on AI ethics were examined using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results showed that the number of articles on AI (N=3,649) sharply increased from 2016 since the Google DeepMind Challenge Match. Less than 4% of articles were about AI ethics (N=130); each news media outlet had a different proportion of articles by topics including AI ethics. Thirteen out of the total 22 global AI ethics guidelines were addressed in the Korean news media outlets, in addition to one new ethical theme. Notably, responsibility, diversity, and hidden costs have rarely been covered in the Korean news media outlets. The findings suggest that more attentions to less discussed but important AI ethics themes need to be paid in the Korean society.
신문 기사는 대중의 과학기술 이해와 인식형성에 영향을 미친다. 인공지능에 대한 관심이 증대되면서 관련 기사도 증가하고 있다. 본 연구는 한국의 주요 일간지 인공지능 기사의 추세를 분석하고 특히 인공지능 윤리에 관한 기사가 국제 인공지능 윤리지침과 비교하여 어떤 주제를 조명해왔는지 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 경향신문, 동아일보, 조선일보, 한겨레의 창간일부터 2019년까지 제목에 인공지능, AI, 人工知能 이 포함된 기사를 웹 크롤링하여 데이터베이스를 구축하고 기술통계와 형태소분석을 시행하였다. 인공지능 기사 중 윤리를 다룬 기사를 키워드와 매뉴얼 선별을 통해 추출하여 기술통계와 내용분석을 하였다. 연구 결과 인공지능 기사는 2016년 알파고 대 이세돌 9단의 대결을 기점으로 급격하게 증가하여 사회적 사건이 인공지능 보도를 촉발함을 시사했다. 전체 인공지능에 관한 기사 중(N=3,649) 인공지능 윤리 기사는 약 4% 미만(N=130)이며, 신문사별 인공지능 기사 중 윤리 기사의 비중이 다르게 나타났다. 총 14개의 윤리 지침이 다뤄졌고, 책임, 다양성, 간접 비용에 관한 기사의 수는 한국 신문에서는 현저히 적었다. 본 연구결과는 중요하지만 한국 사회에 상대적으로 덜 공론화된 이슈에도 관심이 필요하다는 것을 시사한다.
