With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, discussions on the extent and speed at which machines will replace human jobs become important. The sports sector is no exception, and baseball seeks to change as it considers introducing a umpiring system by artificial intelligence(AI), called as ‘robot umpire’. Sports is an act of competing physical abilities among humans, and since sports has social and moral values, discussions on a desirable future prospects are needed before full-scale use of technology. This study presented the future of sports through scenario analysis based on surveys and in-depth interviews, focusing on Korean professional baseball, which is preparing to introduce the robot umpire system. Based on these data, key variables were extracted and four alternative futures scenarios were derived. And after exploring the various possibilities of the future, this study selected the Preferred Future and suggested several ways to realize it. The academic significance of this study lies in expanding the discussion of 'Technical Intervention into the Sports Area' to the discussion of 'Robot Umpiring', which has long been an issue of sports philosophy and ethics.
4차 산업혁명 시대가 본격화하면서 기계가 앞으로 인간의 일자리를 대체할 범위와 속도에 대한 논의가 중요해지고 있다. 스포츠 분야도 예외는 아니며, 특히, 야구는 ‘로봇 심판’으로 불리는 인공지능(AI) 기계에 의한 판독 시스템 도입을 검토하면서 변화를 모색하고 있다. 스포츠는 단순히 경기 이상의 상징성을 지닌 사회·도덕적 가치를 함의한 행위이므로 스포츠와 과학기술의 본격적인 접목에 앞서서 바람직한 미래상에 대한 논의가 선제적으로 필요하다. 본 연구는 스포츠 영역에서 기술의 침투와 적용이 가져올 미래의 쟁점과 경기 양상의 변화를 ‘로봇 심판’ 도입을 준비하고 있는 한국 프로야구를 중심으로 전망하였다. 이를 위해 한국 프로야구에 종사하고 있는 선수, 감독, 심판, 해설자에 대한 심층 인터뷰와 프로야구팬들을 대상으로 한 설문조사를 통해 한국 프로야구에 로봇심판 도입과 관련한 핵심 변인을 추출하고, 이를 바탕으로 4개의 대안적 미래(alternative futures) 시나리오를 도출하였다. 아울러, 기계판독 도입이 가져올 다양한 미래의 가능성을 탐색한 후, 한국 프로야구가 지향해야 할 바람직한 미래(Preferred Future)를 선정하고, 이를 실현하기 위한 방안들을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 스포츠 철학 및 윤리의 오랜 쟁점이었던 ‘스포츠 영역에의 기술 개입’에 대한 논의를 ‘로봇 심판 도입’의 논의까지 확장했다는데 학술적 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.
