Among various plastic additives, di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has been most concerned due to its high leaching potentials and harmful impact to human health as well as ecosystem. However, the removal efficiency of catalytic ozonation was not high due to the insufficient generation of hydroxyl radicals as well as fast decay of hydroxyl radicals before the contact with DEHP. To overcome these limitations, novel $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ are fabricated and incorporated to the surface and pores of ceramic membranes for the increased production of hydroxyl radicals and the promoted contact with DEHP inside of the confined pores.
In this study, $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalyst was synthesized and newly applied as a novel heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of DEHP. The generation of hydroxyl radicals was maximized when the molar ratio of $V_2O_5$ was reached 4 % of $TiO_2$. The results from reaction kinetic analysis exhibited that the second-order kinetic constant of V/T=4 ($V_2O_5/TiO_2$ =0.04, mol/mol) was 2057.1 ($M^{-1}s^{-1}$), which significantly higher than that of V/T=0 ($TiO_2$ only) and ozonation only.
$V_2O_5/TiO_2$ nanoparticles were successfully incorporated to the surface and pore walls of ceramic membrane by the calcination of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ gel precursors. The combination of the catalyst coated ceramic membrane and ozonation showed enhanced oxidation of DEHP, which the removal efficiencies of DEHP was higher than 95% even at the 3 seconds of contact time. It might be due to the increased generation of hydroxyl radicals by novel $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalysts as well as the confined volume of pores increased the contact between hydroxyl radicals and DEHP.
Next, the impact of natural organic matters (NOM) during the ozonation of DEHP was investigated. In the presence of natural organic matter, the removal efficiency of DEHP was increased to 98%, while only 50% of initial NOM were oxidized. From these results, it can be hypothesized that hydroxyl radicals selectively oxidized DEHP rather than organic matters with complex functional groups.
In conclusion, the ozonation coupled with the catalyst-incorporated ceramic membrane could be a great suggestion for the removal of DEHP in water treatment processes.
