Novice graduate students struggle to read papers in English due to lack of vocabulary knowledge. To cope with this, many graduate students attempt to learn vocabulary by making word lists while reading papers. Interviews with graduate students who have experience in making word lists show that most of them create word lists in the form of simple word with definition. They agree on the need for context in vocabulary learning, however, they do not include contexts because it takes a lot of time and efforts. In this paper, I propose a service Tip-Read, that generates context-based vocabulary while reading process. From a design study, I establish design requirements for the service. Based on the requirements, I have designed and implemented the service. A user study was conducted with 12 graduate students and observed that the service did not disturb the reading process. Also, the participants showed their satisfaction of using Tip-Read service. The paper can be referred when exploring learning aspects of context-based vocabulary.
대학원에 갓 입학한 대학원생들은 어휘 때문에 영어 논문 읽기에 어려움을 많이 겪는다. 이에 대한 대처방안으로 논문을 읽으면서 단어장을 만들어 어휘를 학습하고자 하는 대학원생들이 많다. 단어장을 만들어 본 경험이 있는 대학원생을 대상으로 인터뷰한 결과 대부분은 단순 단어-뜻 형태의 단어장을 제작하고 있었다. 이들은 어휘 학습에서 문맥의 필요성은 느끼고 있지만 인쇄된 논문에서 문맥까지 옮겨적기에는 시간과 노력이 많이 들어 만들지 못 했다고 한다. 본 연구는 논문 읽기 과정 중 문맥 단어장 제작해주는 서비스를 제안한다. 디자인 스터디를 통해 디자인 목표를 도출했으며 이를 바탕으로 서비스를 설계 및 구현하였다. 대학원생 12명을 대상으로 사용자 실험을 진행했고 서비스 사용 경험에 대해 수집했다. 참가자들은 서비스가 읽기 경험을 방해하지 않는다고 했으며 서비스에 대해 긍정적인 반응을 보였다. 본 논문은 문맥 단어장의 어휘 학습 측면을 탐구할 수 있는 기반이 될 수 있다.
