Recently, many research institutes have been actively conducting research related to estimating the location of the autonomous vehicles. This paper is a study of global localization based on the matching between the HD map and 3D Point Cloud. In the case of the Global Positioning System (GPS), which is mainly used to estimate the location of the autonomous vehicles. However, the GPS system may not work properly in an urban area with tunnels and buildings that is a factor that causes multi-path and signal blockage. In the case of cameras, their performance is not constant in the change of time and space as they have sensitive characteristic such as weather, illumination, etc. However, 3D LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) uses signals reflected from the surrounding environment to directly detect distance information and has relatively robust characteristics such as weather, illumination, etc. Also, the 3D LiDAR returns very accurate object intensity and distance values. Therefore, the information of the road such as lane, road marking can be strongly detected using the characteristics of 3D LiDAR.
For HD Map, information about lane and road marking is provided in the form of a GIS based vector map. 3D LiDAR provides data in the form of points throughout the area that can be detected, and these different types of data make it difficult to perform localization. The proposed method estimates translation and rotation by matching HD map and local map through adaptive phase correction. It also optimizes the match between the two images in the HD Map and local map using the distance transform. This method can overcome the difficulty of localization using different data types. To detect lane and road marking information, road areas are detected using region growing-based segmentation methods, and local maps of lane and road marking information are generated through multi-level Otsu’s threshold. It then estimates the global localization by matching the HD Map with the local map. To summarize the proposed method, lane and road markings on the HD Map are detected using 3D LiDAR and global localization is conducted by matching each other. Finally, the experiment near Sangam World Cup Apartment Complex in Seoul proved the proposed method. The experiments have confirmed that the proposed method is superior to the existing method.
