For the last decade, the concept of mutual coupling in bilayer metamaterials provides an useful tool in understanding and solving many types of problems. Also, analytical models of bilayer metamaterials are developed. To solve these problems, there are two formulations of the equations of motion commonly used: Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics. Temporal coupled mode theory, the simpler form of Hamiltonian mechanics, represents transport properties with coupling between modes and resonance-assisted coupling between the ports. Lagrangian provides effective properties of bilayer metamaterials by considering electric and magnetic coupling independently. In this thesis, we study the relations of two formulations and suggest modified temporal coupled mode equation with independent electric and magnetic coupling.
