Ride-hailing is a relatively nascent, rapidly scaling service in the mobility industry. This study examines the relationship between ride-hailing service and air pollution, a reemerging environmental concern. Using comprehensive datasets from the City of Chicago, panel data is constructed for fixed-effects regression analyses. Findings show that air pollution and unfavorable weather conditions are positively associated with increased ride-hailing transactions. Moreover, such relations appear stronger during more flexible times of the day (off-peak hours) and days of the week (weekends), in hotter and colder weather, and in community areas with larger populations and more active commuters. Findings verify that higher fine particulate matter ($PM_2.5$) concentrations trigger individuals' intention to avert exposure to ambient air pollution, and thus increase travels by ride-hailing, a less exposed mode. Results call for public and private entities to bring forth policies and strategies that encourage shared rides to materialize the benefits of the sharing economy and prevent social costs from aggravated congestion.
공유경제 시장이 활성화되면서 모빌리티 시장에서는 차량호출(ride-hailing) 서비스가 빠르게 확산하고 있다. 본 연구는 전 세계적으로 심각한 위협이 되는 대기오염과 차량호출 서비스 간의 관계를 살펴본다. 이를 위해 시카고시의 차량호출 서비스 거래 자료를 기반으로 패널자료를 구축하고 고정효과모형(fixed-effects model)을 사용해 실증분석을 수행했다. 분석 결과, 미세먼지 농도 증가와 부정적인 기상 조건 모두 차량호출 이용량의 증가와 긍정적으로 연관되어 있음을 확인했다. 또한 사용자, 시간 및 지역 특성에 따라 연관성의 정도가 다름을 발견했다. 위 결과는 대기오염이 심할 때 개인들이 미세먼지 노출로 인한 위험을 줄이기 위해 야외 노출이 적은 이동수단을 선택함을 증명한다. 이 같은 회피 행동으로 차량호출 서비스 이용량이 무분별하게 증가하면 사회적 비용이 발생하기 때문에, 본 연구는 기업과 정부 기관이 소비자가 호출형 차량공유(ride-sharing) 서비스를 사용하도록 유도하는 전략과 정책을 수립해야 함을 시사한다.
