High-resolution dynamic wavefront control has long been a challenge in optics. The metasurface utilizes subwavelength structures, so called metaatoms, enabling control of phase, amplitude, and polarization to overcome the limitations of conventional optical modulators. Modern active metasurfaces have been developed based on phase modulation of the metaatom, but there are significant drawbacks in reconstructing the desired wavefront due to the limitation of simultaneous modulation of phase and amplitude. This problem can cause significant functional degradation in technologies relying on subwavelength spatiotemporal modulation of the complex field such as dynamic holography, high-resolution imaging, optical tweezers, optical memory, optical communications, etc. In this paper, we introduce "metamolecule" which incorporates two metaatoms consisting of metal antennas and graphene plasmonic nanoresonators. The properties of the metamolecule are determined by the Fermi levels of the graphene nanoresonators, and these two control parameters allow for large amplitude modulation as well as full phase modulation. As an intuitive guideline to maximize this complex amplitude modulation, a generalized graphical approach has been developed. In addition, to show the capability of the metamolecular designs, active beam steering and beam focusing are demonstrated by full-wave simulations.
