Art is the fruit of creativity. It can also serve as a touchstone for machines trained on large amounts of data with various algorithms to test their originality. As those examples raise the questions about whether creation is unique to human beings, there has been growing academic interest in the essence of creativity. Many attempts have been tried to quantify creativity, but there is still a lack of effort to explain in detail the manifestation of creativity especially in the eyes of a particular art. In this paper, we analyzed the network of classical music to measure creativity and the measurement results were validated by musical characteristics. Furthermore, we showed that creativity and melodic entropy reveal a positive correlation based on the insight that history of Western music was a process of breaking down the traditional harmonic rules. Unlike prior research, this study does not merely quantified creativity, but also conducted specific case studies and explored the meaning of musical creativity in Western musical history by examining the relationship between creativity and diversity.
예술은 창의성의 결정체이다. 다양한 알고리즘으로 대량의 데이터를 학습한 기계가 창의성을 평가받는 시험대이기도 하다. 창작은 인간의 고유한 영역이라는 인식에 의문이 제기됨에 따라 창의적이라는 것은 무엇인지에 대한 학문적 관심이 증가하고 있다. 창의성을 계량화하는 시도가 다양하게 이루어지고 있지만 특정 예술 분야의 관점에서 창의성이 발현된 모습을 특정하여 설명하려는 노력은 아직 부족하다. 본 논문에서는 서양 고전음악의 선율의 창의성을 복잡계 네트워크로 분석하였다. 서양음악의 역사가 고전음악의 화성적 규칙을 허물어 나가는 과정이었다는 통찰을 바탕으로 창의성과 선율 엔트로피가 양의 상관관계를 가진다는 점을 보였다. 단순히 창의성을 계량화하는 기존 연구와는 달리 구체적인 사례 분석을 통해 음악 예술 영역에 있어 창의성과 다양성이 주목할 만한 상관관계를 갖고 있음을 보였다.
