Research on a firm's lifespan can be used as important baseline data for establishing future strategies and conducting future research as it accurately shows the quickly changing industrial structures, the current state of industrial activities and their causes. This paper analyses the survival rate according to the cause of closure. Data analysis of North American listed companies between 1970 and 2015 showed firms that closed due to M&As survived 2 more years on average than firms that closed due to other causes. It also showed that the difference in survival rate according to the cause of closure was industry dependent. Research on a firm’s lifespan is important future research data that can pinpoint the causes and phenomena of social change caused by change in jobs as well as change in firms and industries. As the cause of closure is also a factor that affects the lifespan of a company, more detailed baseline data can be obtained if the cause of closure and industry are divided according to the research purpose. This will enable a more effective analysis when conducting future research and establishing future strategies.
기업의 생멸에 대한 연구는 미래 빠르게 변화하는 산업구조와 기업활동의 현황과 원인을 보다 정확히 알 수 있어 미래 전략 수립 및 미래 연구 수행에 중요한 기초자료로 사용될 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 특히 사멸원인에 따른 생존율을 분석하였다. 1970년~2015년 기간의 북미상장기업 정보로 분석을 수행한 결과 M&A로인한 사멸과 그 외 사멸을 구분하였을 때, M&A인해 사멸한 기업은 그렇지 않은 기업보다 평균적으로 2년 더 오래 생존하는 모습이 있었고, 사멸원인에 따른 생존율 차이는 산업에 따라 달라지는 것으로 나타났다. 기업의 생멸과 관련한 연구는 기업, 산업의 변화 뿐만 아니라 일자리의 변화로 인한 사회 변화의 원인과 현상을 정확하게 파악할 수 있게 해주는 중요한 미래 연구 자료인데, 사멸원인도 기업의 생멸에 영향을 주는 요소이기 때문에 연구목적에 따라 사멸원인과 산업에 따른 구분을 한다면 보다 상세한 기초자료를 얻을 수 있고, 이를 통해 미래 연구 수행 및 미래 전략 수립 시 보다 효과적인 분석이 가능할 것이다.
