Growth and innovation are essential elements for the sustainable survival of the industry. Lithium secondary batteries are called 'second semiconductors' and are considered as future industries expected to grow in the future. However, academic studies on the strengthening of competitiveness for sustainable growth are very insufficient, and short-term improvements on the current problems are mostly presented. Therefore, this study points out the problems of the secondary battery industry that evolved around the gradual performance improvement and suggests the growth strategy of the lithium secondary battery industry as a future industry based on the disruptive innovation theory that is beyond the existing practice.
For this purpose, the study examines the factors that determine the competitiveness of the future industry of lithium secondary batteries, focusing on various theoretical considerations. In particular, the conceptual research and limitations of innovation theory were analyzed, and the core drivers for sustainable growth were derived from reasonable price, innovative technology, and business environment (policy support, network) focusing on disruptive innovation drivers and development state theory. In addition, the determinants of lithium secondary battery competitiveness were finally derived through previous studies on competitiveness of other industries and in-depth interviews with five experts. Then, a survey was conducted on 28 employees of lithium secondary battery industry for decision-making AHP to select priority of importance.
According to the analysis results, the priority of competitiveness importance was technology, price, market response, production, and business environment competitiveness. In addition, the priority of the importance of the sub-factors was identified in the order of 1) development competitiveness of core technology and new technology that make up technology and price competitiveness, 2) securing the supply and demand system of core material and 3) improving quality level. Through the study, it was found that the strengthening of the competitiveness of lithium secondary batteries as a future industry is market encroachment based on innovative technology and reasonable price emphasized in disruptive drivers. Moreover, the creation of industrial ecosystem and institutional support policies were selected as important sub-factors of business environment competitiveness, and it was confirmed that they supported the importance of regulations and standards which promote the network and changes that share the interests emphasized in the disruptive innovation driver.
In conclusion, it was confirmed that the secondary battery has evolved through the theory of sustaining innovation, but the area can be reduced due to technical limitations and intensifying competition in the future industry. In addition, the disruptive innovation theory that Christensen insisted has a limit to explain the growth strategy of lithium secondary batteries. Therefore, if the disruptive innovation motive and the development state theory of the broad concept are used as future growth strategies to strengthen innovative technology, reasonable price, and business environment (policy support, industrial ecosystem creation) competitiveness, and the interaction of each element is promoted, we can not only advance the realization of future industries and the timing of commercialization, but also enable sustainable and growth as a core industry.
The point that suggested the determinants of competitiveness based on the disruptive innovation theory and AHP conducted in the study is not considered in the previous studies, and I consider that it will contribute to the expansion of the scope and direction of the follow-up studies. In addition, it is expected that the introduction of complementary alternatives and the understanding of the limitations of the innovation theory through various theoretical considerations on areas in which the disruptive innovation theory cannot be explain can make an academic contribution to further research.
