This study was intended to analyze the potential as a benchmark oil indicator for the China Crude Oil Futures (SC) listed on the Shanghai International Energy Exchange in 2018. To this end, WTI, Brent, Dubai, and SC crude oil time series data, which are well known as benchmark oil in the existing oil market, were utilized for comparative analysis in terms of efficient market hypothesis, long-term equilibrium and cluster phenomena. The empirical analysis showed that the SC did not differ much in terms of market efficiency and long-term equilibrium compared to the other three markets. However, we could see that the measurement invariant feature of the SC market was different from other crude oil markets, and we inferred that the transfer entropy estimate resulted in the flow of information from the three different markets to the SC market due to immature market uncertainty and accumulating investor confidence. The study suggests that the potential benchmark index possibility is also open as the relatively immature SC market is increasingly becoming a major crude oil market.
본 연구는 2018년 상하이 국제 에너지 거래소에 상장된 중국 크루드 오일 선물(SC)을 대상으로 벤치마크 오일 지표로서의 가능성에 대해 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 기존 오일시장에서 벤치마크 지표로 잘 알려진 WTI, Brent, Dubai와 SC 원유 시계열 자료를 활용하여 효율적 시장 가설, 장기 균형, 그리고 군집 현상 측면에서 비교 분석하였다. 실증 분석 결과 SC는 다른 세 시장과 비교하여 시장 효율성 및 장기 균형 측면에서 큰 차이를 보이지 않았다. 다만, SC 시장의 불변 측정 특징은 다른 원유시장과 차이를 보임을 알 수 있었는데, 우리는 트랜스퍼 엔트로피 추정을 통해 다른 세 시장에서 SC 시장으로 형성되는 정보의 흐름이 시장 불확실성 완화 및 투자자 신뢰 축적에 기인하는 것으로 추론하였다. 이로부터 본 연구는 아직 상대적으로 성숙하지 못한 SC 시장이 기존 주요 원유시장으로 점차 동조화되어 가면서 잠재적 벤치마크 지표 가능성 또한 열려 있음을 시사한다.
