Experience of the physical world shapes our understanding of the world. Parsing the physical contents based upon this understanding and predicting how physical events will unfold are remarkable ability of human. Recent neuroscience studies claimed that our physical intuitions are associated with mental simulation in a way that is somewhat analogous to what occurs in physics engine for video games, and provided evidence to indicate that underlying processes are mediated by multiple brain regions, including bilateral frontal and parietal cortices. However, little has been known about exactly how the metal simulation relying physical intuitions (simply called “physical simulation”) guides causal inference of physical events. To address this issue, this study proposes a novel task design with varying types and degree of physical simulation. The task is implemented with physics engine, allowing us to quantify the complexity of physical simulation. We found multiple cortical and subcortical areas are engaged in this process. These findings demonstrate the brain’s ability to orchestrate various types of physical inference via mental simulation.
