Biomaterials including biomedical devices and cell culture materials can induce damage of mammalian cells due to bacteria contamination and chemical substances. Therefore, surface modification processes of biomaterials have been developed to minimize cellular damage. Initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) is a vapor-based polymer thin film deposition process and it can synthesize robust polymer film with nm thickness. In this thesis, the iCVD process was used for the surface modification of biomaterials. Ionic polymer thin film with quaternary ammonium compounds was applied to antibacterial coating and polymer with weak cell adhesion was developed for enzyme-free cell detachment procedure. The developed surface modification strategies could prevent cellular damage from bacterial contamination and chemical treatment.
