Chronic diseases, which result in huge social costs, are mostly preventable by breaking bad habits and changing behaviors. Meanwhile, wearable technology has enabled quantified self-tracking of personal health data and push notifications to motivate change in behavior. However, there was scarcity in studies that examine the effectiveness of these push messages, in improving health behavior. This study aims to examine the effect of message repetition on sitting (sedentary) time of wearable users. We worked with an Asia-based wearable device company to analyze the real-world data of wearable users. Our findings indicate that when push messages are given repeatedly, (1) a positive effect existed in the short term until a specific point in time, but (2) was exhausted (or worn out) over time. The insights gained in this study may provide guidance to designing services for wearable devices in the future.
