This study analyzed how patent information of tech-startups in ICT fields affected M&A success. The result shows that the number of patent claims, backward citations, family patent and drawings influence the success of M&A in a positive way. On the other hand, the number of independent claims has negative effect on the success of M&A. Other independent variables such as the type of claims, and the number of inventors, IPCs and forward citations, do not significantly affect the success of M&A for tech startups. Unlike most prior studies related to M&A factors, this study focused on patent information analysis and provides practical implications to enhance the potential for M&A success thorough the empirical analysis of patent information or tech startups. That is, tech startups which aims to exit through M&A needs to develop an patent application strategy which can enhance the number of patent claims, backward citations, family patents and drawing when filing a patent application. To enhance the validity and generalization of the research result, further study should be carried out including various technical fields.
본 연구는 국내외 ICT 분야의 기업창업기업을 대상으로 기술창업기업의 특허정보가 M&A 성공가능성에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 분석하였다. 분석결과, 특허의 청구항수. 인용수, 패밀리수, 도면수가 M&A의 성공 가능성에 정(+)의 영향을 미친다고 나타났고, 독립항수는 M&A 성공 가능성에 부(-)의 영향을 미친다고 나타났다. 다른 독립변수로 활용된 청구항계열, 발명자수, IPC수, 피인용수는 기술창업기업의 M&A에 유의미한 영향을 끼치지 않는 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구는 대부분의 M&A 요인관련 선행연구와 달리 특허정보분석에 중점을 두었다는 것에 의의를 두고, 기술창업기업의 특허정보 실증분석을 통해 M&A 성공 가능성을 높이기 위한 실무적 함의를 제공하고 있다. 즉, M&A를 통한 Exit을 목표로 하는 기술창업기업은 특허를 출원할 때 청구항수, 인용수, 패밀리수, 도면수 등을 강화할 수 있는 출원전략을 수립할 필요가 있는 것이다. 본 연구결과의 유효성 및 일반화 가능성을 더욱 강화하기 위해서는 다양한 기술분야를 대상으로 후속 연구를 실시할 필요가 있다.
