A commitment device, an attempt to bind oneself for a successful goal-achievement, has been used as an effective strategy to promote behavior change. However, little is known about how commitment devices are used and what aspects of commitment devices are related to behavior change in the real-world setting. We analyzed a largescale dataset spanning a 4-year period from StickK, an online behavior change support system which supports both financial and social commitments to help attain behavior change goals. We characterize the types of target behaviors and the topics of behavior change goals and then report descriptive statistics about commitment device usage. A series of regression analyses reveal that successful goal achievement was dependent on the configuration of a financial commitment device, but social commitment devices lacked a significant relationship. We provide several practical design implications for online behavior changes support systems such as enabling effective user interactions for commitment devices and exploring novel commitment device design space.
설득적 접근을 통한 인간의 행동 변화는 HCI 분야에서 오랫동안 연구되어 온 분야이다. 그러나 오랫동안 고착되어 온 행동을 변화시키는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니며, 이를 이루기 위해선 인간 행동에 대한 이해 및 연구가 우선적으로 실행되어야 한다. HCI를 비롯한 사회심리학, 행동경제학 등에선 인간의 행동 변화에 영향을 주는 요소 및 목표 행동을 성취하고 궁극적으로 행동 변화를 이끌어낼 수 있는 방법들을 연구해왔다. 이 중에서도 본 연구는 행동경제학에서 나온 개념인 ‘행동장치’(Commitment Device) 를 기반으로 한 온라인 행동 변화 지원 시스템인 StickK.com 사례 연구를 통하여 효과적인 사용자-시스템 상호작용 행동 변화 인터페이스 설계 및 디자인에 대해 고찰하고 앞으로 나아갈 방향에 대해 다루고자 한다.
