In order to promote products, some firms and individuals establish direct relationship with their customers on social media. Information and opinions about product diffuse through networks formed by online friendship. The producers can facilitate the diffusion by attaining high status in networks. In order to quantify the effect of status in networks on performance, I collected data from social media where writers and readers share their reading activities. Conducting regression analysis, I discovered that gender plays an important role in the effect of a writer’s status on performance. Status of a female writers in networks was positively correlated to their performance but the effect of status of male writers was not significant. In the writers online network, female writers were more active and influential than male writers. Furthermore, they obtained grater network advantages than male writers did. This study suggests that establishing direct relationship with customers on social media is an effective customer engagement strategy for underperforming individual producers.
