The combination of the technological progress and increased accessibility has brought technologies closer to humans in terms of the time spent and embedded them in everyday life. The adoption of digital technologies, nevertheless, has not followed a uniform pattern and different countries around the world and have shown their own distinct ways of adopting communication channels. Despite the fact, study that closely examines how people interact with technology in relation to society and culture is still few and far between. In the light of this dearth of existing studies, this study is aimed at examining mobile instant messenger use by the deaf and the hard of hearing. More specifically, this research will verify hypothesis whether those with hearing impairment have higher perceived value for Korea’s most used mobile instant messenger Kakao Talk. Based on the theories of uses and gratifications and perceived value, the research found that deaf and the hard of hearing have higher economic, social and emotional values in using Kakao Talk while the figures for functional value didn’t show statistically significant difference between those with hearing impairment and non-disabled peers.
