This study introduces an effective way to optimize the structure of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with scattering layers for the maximal external quantum efficiency (EQE) based on world’s first ‘integrated trans-scale simulation’ involving radiative transfer theory. From the global optimization using the proposed integrated trans-scale simulation, the maximum EQE of OLEDs with a scattering layer, as well as the corresponding structure, is predicted. In the case of an outer scattering layer, the calculated maximum EQE can be as high as 42.9% upon careful optimization considering the scatterance of a scattering film and the asymmetry parameter of individual scattering events therein. With the optimized structure based on this study, OLEDs with EQE of 40.1% are demonstrated, which reveals the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed approach. From global optimization further involving an inner scattering layer, EQE of more than 55% is predicted for a structure having a thick electron transport layer decoupling loss to surface plasmon polaritons.
