In this research, we propose the direct cooling using dielectric nanofluids for electric vehicle battery. Dielectric nanofluid is a mixture of fluid and nanometer-sized particle which can maintain the stable dispersion condition longer than the conventional mixture. The characteristics of dielectric nanofluids are high performance of heat transfer and absolute electric insulation. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and silicone oil are used to synthesize of dielectric nanofluid and high molecular surfactant are used for stable dispersion. For application of dielectric nanofluid in direct cooling, thermal properties of dielectric nanofluids such as thermal conductivity, natural convection heat transfer coefficient, viscosity, dispersion stability and electric insulation are investigated. Using transient hot-wire method, considerable enhancement of the heat transfer performance is observed and very low viscosity comparable to the water is measured by viscometer. In addition, dispersion stability of dielectric nanofluid is confirmed by measuring degradation of the extinction coefficient with on time. Consequently, these results show that dielectric nanofluid can be applied to electric devices cooling and we are hopeful that this technology will bring innovation in industry of electric devices.
