This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between adolescent and adulthood experience and environmental attitude and behaviors. Specifically, this research aimed to identify the factors and insights associated with a pro-environmental attitude and behaviors that are difficult to capture via one-time surveys and interviews. This study used survey data from 610 American participants, tracked over a period of 25-years: the Longitudinal Study on American Youth. Findings showed that experience of nature and related education gathered from various points of life via diverse channels were efficacious in explaining the level of environmental attitude and behaviors. Furthermore, it was found that the experiences accumulated throughout the young period of participants were continuously associated with the present level of all environmental knowledge and behaviors. Among these, pro-environmental behavior was most substantially explained by adolescent and young youth period of experiences. To empirically demonstrate this, ordered logistic regression and multiple regression was conducted for a total of nine models, three models (Demographic features, Demographic features + Adult nature experience, Demographic features + Adult nature experience + Adolescent nature experience) for each dependent variable. These empirical findings provide critical insights for both existing efforts to investigate the mechanism of environmental concern, knowledge and behavior in the environmental psychology field and future directions of green policies for fostering environment conscious citizens.
본 연구는 자연과 관련된 생애주기적 경험이 환경 우호적인 관심, 지식, 행동에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 미국 청소년 610명의 성장기 추적 데이터를 다중 회기 분석과 순서형 로지스틱 회기분석을 통해 실증적으로 분석했다. 기존의 환경적 관심의 계기를 물어보는 인터뷰 기반 질적 연구나, 일시적으로 진행되는 설문 조사의 한계를 보완할 수 있다는 점에서 연구가치가 있으며, 연구 결과, 사람들이 삶의 다양한 시기와 경로를 통해 얻는 다수의 자연과 관련된 직접, 간접, 대리 경험과 교육은 현재의 환경 태도 및 행동 수준을 설명하는 데 효과적임이 밝혀졌다. 특히 환경 친화적인 지식과 행동의 경우, 어렸을 때 (청소년기) 때의 자연 경험과 교육이 성인에 이르러서도 영향을 미친다는 사실을 발견했다. 이러한 연구 결과를 통해, 대중의 환경 친화적인 태도와 행동을 제고하고자 하는 실증 기반 녹색 정책의 수립과 실행에 중요한 통찰력을 제공하고자 한다.
