The study aims to show the characteristics of the Korean stock market by comparing the performance of the Korean stock market with that of the U.S. stock market. U.S. stock markets have a positive skewness and a low winning ratio to benchmark performance. This study examined the characteristics of the Korean stock market by proving whether these features also appear in the Korean stock market and what the differences were like. According to empirical results, the Korean market showed greater skewness and volatility than the U.S. market, with lower winning ratio to benchmark. These features have been highlighted more significantly in longer term returns. Also these features appear in categorized subsets by time of listing and subsets by market capitalization. Not only individual stocks’ return but also portfolio returns created by bootstrap methodology showed lower winning ratio to benchmarks. Also, concentration of wealth creation in Korean market is far greater than U.S. market. These results show that in the Korean stock market, investors without expertise are more likely to lose money than in the U.S. stock market.
