Along with an advance in information and communications technology, the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered smart learning has reshaped the educational environment innovatively. Previously, most parents had to determine their educational investment based on potentially inaccurate belief on their child’s academic level or interests due to lack of information about their children. However, parents can invest effectively in child’s education considering their child’s aptitude and interest after they receive information on children through smart learning. Built upon the previous economics literature on education, we develop a theoretical model for the change in parents’ educational investment when the information asymmetry between parents and children disappears and then empirically test our theoretical prediction. We find that upon the information disclosure, parents increase their investment on children and that they are more sensitive to scholastic investment than the non-scholastic counterpart. In addition, the investment change by parents with low-performing children turns out to be higher than that of those with high-performing children due to a larger disparity between the parents’ expectation and the actual child’s academic ability.
정보 통신 기술 발달과 함께, 인공지능을 기반으로 한 스마트 러닝의 도입으로 아이들의 교육 시장이 혁신적으로 변화하였다. 과거 대다수의 부모는 자녀에 관한 정보가 부족했기 때문에 자녀의 학업 수준이나 관심사에 대한 부정확한 기대를 형성해 교육 투자를 결정하곤 했다. 하지만, 스마트 러닝을 통해 자녀에 관한 맞춤형 정보를 제공받을 수 있게 되면서 자녀의 실제 학업능력과 관심사를 고려한 효율적인 교육 투자가 가능해졌다. 본 연구에서는 부모의 교육 투자에 대한 이론모형 구축을 통해 부모의 기대치에 따른 투자 변화량을 예측하였고, 실제로 부모와 자녀 사이의 정보 불균형이 사라지면 부모가 교육 투자량을 변화시키는 것을 실증적으로 보였다. 자녀에 대한 이해도가 높아지면 부모는 아이를 위한 투자를 증가시키는데, 비교과 학습 보다 교과 학습을 위한 투자에 대해서 더 민감하게 반응한다. 더불어, 상위권 자녀보다 하위권 자녀를 둔 부모의 투자 변화폭이 더 큰데, 이는 하위권 자녀를 둔 부모의 기대치와 실제 자녀의 학업 능력 간의 차이가 크기 때문이다.
