A body of extant studies have long demonstrated how the introduction of stock options influences firm’s financial performance. However, few studies have examined firm’s performance after stock options have been exercised. Moreover, most studies have focused on the financial performance which is often influenced by other macroeconomic factors researchers can’t fully control. Therefore, in this thesis, I examine how a firm’s innovation performance, a more direct performance indicatior, of a firm changes after a firm exercise stock option. Using data on Korean ventures from year 2006 to 2017, I find that firms apply more patents, but their patents are less likely to be cited after the firms exercise their stock option. Further, empirical evidence shows that the relationship between stock option exercise and innovation performance becomes more profound within 10 years of listing.
스톡옵션 도입 이후 기업의 재무 성과 변화에 대한 연구는 많이 있다. 그러나 스톡옵션이 행사 되어 실제 보상이 주어진 이후에 기업의 성과에 대해서 연구한 논문은 많지 않다.
또한 거시경제적 변수의 영향을 많이 받는 재무 성과와 달리 스톡 옵션이 행사된 이후 특허 성과의 변화에 대해서 연구되어 있는 논문이 적다. 따라서 본 학위 논문에서는 스톡옵션을 행사해서 큰 금액의 보상이 주어지고 나면 기업의 혁신 성과가 어떻게 변하는지 살펴보았다. 그 결과 스톡옵션 행사 이후 혁신의 양은 늘어나지만 그 가치는 떨어질 수 있으며 이러한 관계는 상장 후 10 년 이내인 벤처에서 잘 나타난다는 점을 발견하였다.
