This study is an empirical analysis of whether the results of ESG's activities relate to financial performance. A company that performed a good ESG strategy hypothesized that its financial performance would be high by minimizing potential conflicts. To verify this, 4,726 companies were validated over a total of seven years from 2011 to 2017 using ESG's rating of the Korea Corporate Governance Service. As a result, ESG's consolidated score, environmental score (E), social score (S), and control score (G) are positively correlated with profitability (ROA) and corporate value (Tobin's Q). It also showed a negative relationship with volatility (52 share volatility). Capital costs (WACC) were rejected because there were no significant statistics. What this study suggests is that companies can increase their value by implementing strategies to improve ESG scores.
본 연구에서는 ESG 활동의 결과와 재무 성과가 어떤 관계를 가지는 지에 대해 분석하였다. ESG 전략을 잘 시행한 기업은 잠재적인 갈등을 최소화하여 전체적인 비용을 줄이므로 기업의 재무적 성과가 높을 것이라는 가설을 세우고, 이를 검증하기 위하여 한국기업지배구조원(Korea Corporate Governance Service)의 ESG 등급을 이용하여 2011년부터 2017년까지 총 7년 동안 총 4726개의 기업을 검증하였다. 그 결과 ESG 통합 점수, 환경 점수(E), 사회 점수(S), 지배 점수(G)는 수익성과(ROA), 기업 가치(Tobin’s Q)와 양의 관계를 가지고 변동성(52주 주가 변동성)과는 음의 관계를 보여주었다. 자본 비용(WACC)은 여러 가지 변수로 다양하게 검증해도 유의한 결과를 도출하지 못했다. 본 연구를 통해 기업은 ESG 점수를 높이기 위한 전략을 시행해 기업 가치를 키울 수 있다는 점을 살펴볼 수 있었다.
