Healthcare, wearable, and IoT (Internet of Things) are emerging as new areas of electronic applications. In these fields, near-infrared light sources can provide various functionalities not available with visible light. With the various benefits of organic technologies (e.g.. flexibility, large-area scalability, etc.) for such applications, research on near-infrared organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is regarded more and more important in the field of OLEDs. However, the studies of near-infrared organic light-emitting diodes (NIR OLEDs) that have been reported to date have not yet been applied to actual products because of their low efficiency that results from relatively high non-radiative decay of excited states inherent to low-gap organic emitters . In order to solve this problem, this study adopts a down-conversion layer based on phosphors, emitting near-infrared light by absorbing high-energy photons in the visible spectral range. The combination of a phosphor with a high radiative quantum yield and a highly efficient orange to red-based OLED with stable operation is shown to produce a reliable near-infrared light sources with high efficiency. A trans-scale modeling is done to elucidate the influence of isotropic spontaneous emission from phosphors and anisotropic Mie scattering on the overall efficiency. In this way, the optimal range of the phosphor concentration has been identified. The fabricated NIR OLED device exhibit the external quantum efficiency (EQE) up to 30% and the near-infrared external quantum efficiency (EQE) as high as 13.9%.
