Since modern people spend most of their time indoors, the influence of the indoor air quality on human health is significant. It leads to the strong needs for the indoor system which can monitor the existence of harmful substances in the air so that the amount of such substances can be controlled. The VOCs (volatile organic compounds) which are one of most common types of pollutant determining the indoor air quality, are light and easily penetrate the human respiratory system. Even when the person is exposed to a small amount of VOCs, the prolonged exposure can result in serious diseases such as cancer, nerve damage, and heart disease, and even lead to the death. Therefore, a high-precision portable monitoring system is strongly required to measure the amount of VOCs present in the surrounding air accurately. In industry, low-cost $MO_X$ (metal-oxide) gas sensors are being actively utilized to secure price competitiveness. By using CMOS interface circuits together with the $MO_X$ gas sensors to read out the accurate concentration of harmful gases, the performance of the monitoring systems which is measured by several key parameters such as power consumption, sensitivity, and selectivity, is getting more and more competitive.
The conventional gas sensor interfaces utilize R-DAC (digital-to-analog converters) or I-DAC to ensure a wide input range. However, the high-power-consuming ADC (analog-to-digital converter) needs to be used to achieve high-accuracy readout. Therefore, the conventional interface inherently has a strong trade-off between the power consumption and readout accuracy. The ADC consumes a large amount of power to achieve high resolution, which is mandatory to achieve sup-ppm level of sensitivity. In this paper, to overcome the trade-off relationship among power consumption, input range, and resolution, a 2-step time-domain interface is proposed to realize a power consumption of 10 $\mu$W, an input range larger than 100 dB, and a resolution higher than 20 bits. In addition, the proposed interface circuit can read from both the resistive and capacitive sensors, making it possible to be used with the temperature and humidity sensors as well, so that the calibrated gas sensor interface can be implemented to improve the system stability.
