In this work, we adopted and optimized the formulation of the ancient iron gall ink (e.g., chemical composition and concentration) to advance the engineering strategies for fluidic interfaces. We found that the in situ oxidation of iron(II)-tannin complex, stable and soluble in aqueous solution, continuously supplied interface-active iron(III)-tannin species to the fluidic interfaces of interest, demonstrated by the unprecedented formation of micrometer-thick, free-standing films at the air-water interface and surfactant-free formation of hollow capsules at the oil-water interface. We believe that the work presented in this paper will provide valuable tools for the design, formation, and application of processable free-standing films and capsules, and also advance the molecular engineering of fluidic interfaces.
