Predicting the user error rate for time-limited pointing tasks has always assumed a stationary target. This study presents a novel model for predicting pointing error rates regardless of the target motion. The model assumes that in the last submovement of the pointing trajectory just before the click, the timing to activate the button is anticipated by the user’s internal clock decoding the temporal cues present in the relative movement between the cursor and the target. Then, based on the recent theory of temporal pointing, the model can predict the user’s pointing error rate with a high $R^2$ for both stationary (0.993) and moving targets (0.986) by analyzing the kinematic characteristics of the last submovement. In addition, empirical parameters obtained from the model fit succeeded in revealing differences in the cognitive characteristics of experts and novices in first-person shooter games.
시간이 제한되어 있는 포인팅 태스크를 수행할 때, 사용자의 에러율을 예측하는 것은 멈춰있는 타겟에 대해서만 가능했다. 본 연구에서는 타겟의 움직임에 상관없이 사용자의 에러율을 정확하게 예측하는 모델을 소개한다. 이 모델은 사용자가 타겟을 클릭하기 직전의 순간에 입력장치의 버튼을 활성화할 타이밍을 예측한다고 가정하였다. 이 때 사용자는 자신의 내부 타이머(internal clock)을 사용하며, 커서와 타겟 간의 상대적인 움직임으로부터 타이밍을 예측할 시간적인 자극을 받아들인다. 본 모델은 최근 연구인 템포럴 포인팅(temporal pointing)에 기반하여 사용자가 컨트롤하는 커서의 마지막 움직임을 분석해서, 멈춰있는 타겟($R^2$=0.993)과 움직이는 타겟($R^2$=0.986)을 클릭할 때 사용자의 에러율을 정확하게 예측하였다. 게다가 모델 피팅을 통해 얻어지는 모델 내의 파라미터들은 1인칭 슈팅게이머들의 숙련도에 따라 다르게 나타났으며,이를 통해 파라미터들이 포인팅 태스크의 숙련도를 대변해준다는 것을 확인하였다.
