Recently, SRI (Socially Responsible Investment) has been globally activated to create a sustainable development ecosystem. As a result, it is becoming important that firms make their effort to ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) as a key indicator of SRI. In this study, I investigated the relationship between ESG rating and financial performance of Korean firms through empirical analysis. The ESG rating is based on the ratings of the CGS(Corporate Governance Service) from 2011 to 2016 divided into the top group (B + and more) and the bottom group (B and less). ROA, WACC and Tobin’s Q are used the financial performance indicators. It also strengthened robustness by analyzing time lags and ESG sectors. As a result of this analysis, the top group of ESG rating showed better long-term financial performance than the bottom group of ESG rating. The result of this study implies that the firms effort for sustainable development through ESG enhanced firms’ financial value.
최근 전세계적으로 지속 가능한 발전 생태계를 조성하기 위한 사회책임투자 (Socially Responsible Investment, SRI)가 활성화되고 있다. 이에 따라 SRI의 핵심지표인 기업의 환경·사회·지배구조(Environment·Social·Governance, ESG)에 대한 노력이 중요시 되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 한국기업의 ESG등급과 재무성과의 관계를 실증분석을 통해 알아보았다. ESG등급은 2011년부터 2016년까지 한국기업지배구조원(CGS) 평가등급을 상위기업군(B+이상), 하위기업군(B이하)으로 나누어 활용하였고, 재무성과 지표는 총자산이익률(ROA), 자본비용(WACC), 토빈큐(Tobin’s Q)를 사용하였다. 또한 시차(time lag) 및 ESG 부문별 분석을 진행하여 강건성을 강화시켰다. 분석 결과, ESG등급이 높은 상위그룹(B+이상)이 하위그룹(B이하)에 비해 장기적인 재무성과가 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 사회의 지속 가능한 발전(Sustainable Development)을 위한 기업의 환경·사회·지배구조에 대한 노력이 실제 기업가치 향상에 도움이 된다는 사실을 시사한다.
