The neglected firm effect, first published by Arbel-Strebel (1982), is one of the market anomalies that contradict the efficient-market hypothesis. It is the phenomenon that the companies that are followed by fewer analysts would earn higher returns than the companies that are highly followed by analysts. However, thanks to the rapid growth of the Internet after the early 1990s, much of the lack of information problem has been solved, compared to the past decades. Therefore, it seemed inadequate to entirely depend on the number of analyst reports when identifying neglected firms. As a result, this study investigated a neglected firm effect using a new alternative measure of neglectedness that reflects each firms‟ own popularity profile. The study was conducted on the Korean stock market through 1997-2017. The result was statistically significant that a portfolio of neglected firms consistently outperformed a portfolio of highly-followed firms, even after controlling for capitalization and the book-to-market ratio. Several robustness tests were performed to improve validity of the inferences including Fama-MacBeth two step regressions. The results indicated that a neglect premium does exist in the market.
