We show that short selling information can be a good predictor of future equity premium in the Korean market. In this study, we constructed the aggregate short interest index (SII) using firm-level short interest data and compared the predictive power of SII with the previous macro variables using predictive regression analysis. As a result, SII outperformed the existing macro variables in the short-term forecasts. Also, SII's asset allocation performance was better than the existing macro variables. In the Korean market, the limit to arbitrage and relatively low short selling volume guarantee the predictive power of SII. Furthermore, this study shows that the market predictability of SII is mostly due to the future cash flow channel. In sum, short sellers are informed traders who can forecast future cash flow news. The results of this study support Miller’s informed trading hypothesis.
본 연구는 한국시장에서 공매도 정보가 미래 위험프리미엄을 예측하는 훌륭한 변수가 될 수 있음을 실증적으로 보였다는데 의의가 있다. 본 연구에서는 시장전체의 공매도 잔량을 활용하여 공매도 지수 (SII)를 구축하였고, 기존에 널리 사용되는 거시경제 변수들과 예측력을 비교하였다. 그 결과, 내표본과 외표본 모두에서 기존 예측 변수들보다 단기에서 좋은 성과를 거두었으며, 자산배분 측면의 성과도 우수함을 보였다. 한국시장에서 차익거래의 제한과 상대적으로 낮은 공매도 거래량은 공매도 지수의 단기 예측력을 담보한다. 나아가 본 연구에서는 공매도 정보의 미래 수익률 예측력이 대부분 미래 현금 흐름 예측에 기인함을 보였다. 종합하면, 공매도 거래자들은 미래 현금 흐름에 대한 예측력이 있는 정보거래자라고 결론 내릴 수 있다. 본 연구결과는 Miller (1977)의 정보거래가설을 지지한다.
