People’s thoughts and behaviors might be influenced by different complex information from a multimedia environment. The cognitive psychological research on the information processing propose that we experience in a situation where we have to select and process specific information, and the ability to control and modulate thoughts and behaviors, helps to solve the problem caused by the complex information. This study attempts to observe the cognitive conflict caused by processing complex information composition, to understand the individual differences in information processing on the basis of cognitive style, and suggest a theoretical foundation to solve the given issues with individual characteristics and gender differences. Based on the top-down/bottom-up process of information, this study designed a face-word emotional Stroop task and an eye-tracking task. The result of the tasks shows that cognitive style modulates cognitive conflict and information processing differs by gender. Based on this result, this study could suggest the necessity that the authorities in cognitive psychology need to expand the understanding of information processing and consider cognitive style as an important personal characteristic related with the processing of information. This research also suggests the possibilities of the advent of optimized educational/media services that consider the characteristics of personal information processes.
정보통신 기술의 발달로 인해 멀티미디어의 사용이 증가하고, 사람들은 다양한 정보들에 노출되고 있다. 복잡한 정보들 속에서 사람들의 사고와 행동에 영향을 받게 되며, 정보처리과정에 대한 인지심리학 연구는 사람들이 복잡하고 다양한 정보, 혹은 정보의 조합들 가운데 어떤 정보를 선택하고 처리해야 하는지에 대한 문제를 경험하고, 행동 목표에 따라 사고와 행동을 조절하고 조정하는 능력을 통해 그 문제를 해결할 수 있다고 제안한다. 본 연구는 정보처리에서 경험하는 인지 갈등을 확인하고, 인지양식을 통해 정보처리 과정의 개인차를 이해하고, 그러한 개인차와 성차를 통해 인지 갈등을 해결하기 위한 이론적 근거를 제시하고자 하였다. 정보처리의 상향식/하향식 처리에 기반하여 정서스트룹과제와 아이트래킹과제를 설계하였으며, 과제 수행 결과, 인지양식이 인지갈등을 조절하고, 정보처리 과정에서의 성별과 인지갈등의 상호작용을 확인하였다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 인지갈등과 관련한 정보처리 과정에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히고, 인지양식이라는 개인의 특성의 역할을 새롭게 검증할 수 있었다. 또한, 교육이나 미디어산업에서 개인의 정보처리 특성을 적용한 맞춤형 서비스의 필요성을 제시함으로써 보다 효율적인 정보처리에 대한 이론적 가치와 응용 가능성을 제시하고 있다.
