As mobile technology has greatly improved and it has become more accessible, we have been able to take advantage of the features and content that smartphones provide without any constraints. The smartphones enrich our lives by providing us with a lot of convenience and enjoyment, but there exists some problems such as distractions or smartphone overindulgence when using smartphones more than necessary. In particular, college students’ use of smartphones in the class is a serious social problem. Many studies have been conducted to analyze how college students use smartphones during the class, and how their smartphone use affects academic performance. Previous studies have done with survey or controlled classroom environment. However, there could be a limitation in that it is difficult to analyze the exact phenomenon because students’ memories could be distorted and the experimental environment does not reflect actual class environment. In this study, we developed a data collection tool to understand college students’ smartphone usage and their life patterns, and we collected a wide range of actual data of college students (n=84) for one semester. The collected data includes not only students’ smartphone usage log, but also various types of data such as psychological data (e.g., depression, stress, dispersion of attention), physical activity, and evaluation for classes. Prior to presenting the results, this paper introduces a methodology for analyzing the data in more detail by inferring whether students attend classes and when they arrive and leave the classroom using collected data. Then, we present a quantitative analysis of the how and when students use the smartphones during the class and what and how they consume content. We also present how students interact with smartphone and which smartphone usage factors are associated with distraction. Finally, we describe what this study suggests, and the implications regarding future directions of smartphone usage analysis studies.
모바일 기술이 크게 발전하고 이에 대한 접근성이 높아지면서 우리는 시공간적 제약없이 스마트폰이 제공하는 기능과 컨텐츠를 이용할 수 있게 되었다. 스마트폰은 우리에게 많은 편리함과 즐거움을 주어 삶을 윤택하게 만들기도 하지만, 필요 이상 사용시 집중력 저하나 과몰입 등의 문제가 발생하기도 한다. 특히, 대학생들의 수업 중 스마트폰 사용은 중고등학생들의 그것과는 달리 통제하기가 어렵다는 점에서 심각한 사회적 문제라고 할 수 있다. 수업 중에 대학생들이 스마트폰을 어떻게 사용하며 이런 스마트폰 사용이 학업에 얼마나 영향을 미치는지 분석하기 위해 많은 연구들이 이루어졌다. 기존 연구에서는 학생들의 기억에 의존하거나 수업 환경을 통제하는 식으로 연구를 진행했다. 하지만 이는 학생들의 기억이 왜곡되거나 실험 환경이 실제 수업 환경을 반영하지 못하여 정확한 현황 분석이 어렵다는 한계점이 있었다. 본 연구에서는 학생들의 스마트폰 사용 및 생활 패턴을 파악을 목적으로, 데이터 수집 툴을 개발했으며 대학생들의(n=84) 한 학기 동안의 학교 생활과 관련된 실제 데이터를 폭넓게 수집했다. 수집된 데이터는 학생들의 스마트폰 사용 기록뿐만 아니라 우울감, 스트레스, 주의 분산 같은 심리적 요소, 신체활동 그리고 수업에 대한 평가 성적 등 다양한 종류의 데이터를 포함한다. 결과를 제시하기에 앞서, 본 논문에서는 수집된 데이터를 기반으로 학생들의 수업 시간 출석 여부와 강의실 입 퇴장 시간을 추론하여 더 정교하게 데이터를 분석하는 방법론을 소개한다. 다음으로, 한 학기 동안 학생들이 수업 중 스마트폰을 언제 얼마나 사용하며 어떤 컨텐츠를 소비하는지에 대한 패턴을 정량적으로 분석한 결과를 제시한다. 또한, 학생들의 스마트폰과 어떻게 상호작용하며 어떤 스마트폰 사용 요소가 주의 분산과 관련이 있는지 제시한다. 마지막으로 본 연구가 시사하는 바와 스마트폰 사용 분석 연구가 향후 어떤 방향으로 나아가야 할지에 대한 함의를 기술한다.
