Self-driving technology is changing the paradigm of the automotive industry. This change also has a significant impact on the strategic direction of the automatic parts industry, which is the rear industry and main subject of technology development. The domestic automotive parts industry, which is comprised of small and medium sized companies, has relatively low bargaining power. Moreover, it is imperative for them to converge with ICT due to the characteristics of self-driving technology. Since there is a time lag between securing technology and occurrence of corporate performance, it is difficult for corporates to make decisions on securing technology. Hence, this study aims to utilize patent indicators to understand the impact of developing self-driving technology on performance of automotive parts companies. 611 of self-driving technology patents from 2000 to 2016 and the financial performance of 270 small and medium businesses that registered corresponding patents were analyzed with consideration of up to four years of time lag. As a result, it showed that patents related to self-driving had a positive impact on asset growth and sales accounting of 2 and 3years respectively in terms of time lag. Unlike the previous research that was limited to a single industry sector, this study performs the analysis on the impact of technology development in the process of convergence with the automotive and ICT industries.
자율주행 기술에 의해 자동차산업의 패러다임이 바뀌고 있다. 이러한 변화는 후방산업이자 요소기술 개발의 주체인 자동차 부품산업의 전략적 방향설정에도 큰 영향을 주고 있다. 중소기업 중심으로 구성된 국내 자동차 부품산업은 상대적으로 협상력이 낮다. 게다가 자율주행 기술 특성상 정보통신 기술과 융합이 필수적이며, 기술확보 후 기업성과 발생까지의 시차가 존재하므로 기술확보에 대한 의사결정에 어려움이 있다. 이에 본 연구는 특허지표를 활용하여 자율주행 기술개발이 부품업체의 성과에 미치는 영향을 파악하고자 한다. 2000년부터 2016년까지 17년간 국내 출원된 611개 자율주행 기술 특허와 해당 특허를 출원한 270개 중소∙중견기업의 재무성과에 대해 최대 4년의 시차를 고려하여 분석하였다. 그 결과 자율주행 관련 특허의 규모가 출원기업의 자산증가에 2년, 매출증가에 3년의 시차를 두고 정(+)의 영향을 주었음을 밝혀내었다. 기존의 연구가 특정 단일 산업분야에 한정된 분석이었다면, 본 연구에서는 자동차산업이 정보통신산업과 융합하는 과정에서의 기술확보가 성과에 미치는 영향과 시차에 대해 분석하였다는 것에 이론적인 함의가 있다.
