This study examines the slope of the term structure of credit default swaps (CDS) in 14 Asian countries. Through cross sectional analysis of CDS spreads, the link between stocks and credit markets through the period structure of credit spreads was found. The slope of credit default swaps in Asian markets has a negative relationship with future stock returns. This profitability is economically and statistically significant even after controlling for existing default risk proxies and existing profitability factors. This is due to asymmetric information from the credit market to the stock market. The credit default swap slope contains information about several fundamental characteristics of the firm that are important for stock return prediction.
