Nuclear issues are a major topic of science journalism. Unlike the social significance of the nuclear issues, the Korean press has received the attention that the news about nuclear power has partisanship. In this research, we analyzed the terminology of the nuclear issues as a manifestation in the news. We also examined how the nuclear news reporting frame of the Korean newspaper is compared with the American and German newspapers and how the words are structured by analyzing the semantic network of the main words in the articles.
As a result of research, Korea's representative conservative and liberal newspapers showed opposing attitudes toward nuclear issues according to media tendency, unlike the American and German newspapers. The Korean newspapers also chose major news sources and the terminology of the nuclear issues in a completely different way. Looking at the flow of nuclear energy industry and environmental movement in Korea, it can be analyzed that the time when the Korean media began to use the terminology of nuclear issues as a partisanship was in the late 1990s.
원자력 이슈는 대표적인 과학 저널리즘 주제다. 원자력 논의의 사회적 중요도와 달리 한국 언론의 원자력 관련 보도는 정파성이 짙다는 지적을 받아 왔다. 이 연구에서는 원자력 보도에서 정파성이 나타나는 현상으로 원자력 용어를 분석해봤다. 한국 신문의 원자력 보도 프레임을 미국·독일 신문과 비교해 어떤 방식으로 정파적인 보도를 하는지 살펴보고, 실제 기사에서 나타난 주요 단어들의 의미연결망 분석을 통해 원자력 용어가 어떻게 메시지를 구성했는지를 살펴봤다.
연구 결과, 한국의 대표적인 보수·진보 신문은 미국·독일 신문과 다르게 매체 성향에 따라 원자력 이슈에 대해 상반된 보도 태도를 나타냈다. 또 주요 취재원을 선택하고, 기사 속 원자력 용어의 선택에서도 전혀 다른 모습을 보였다. 원자력 산업과 환경운동의 발전사를 살펴볼 때, 한국 언론이 원자력 용어를 정파적으로 인식하며 사용하기 시작한 시기는 1990년대 후반이라고 분석할 수 있다.
