Structural battery technology is basically concerned to multifunctional energy storage structure aiming the dramatical increase of energy efficiency that enables optimization of the electrical and mechanical performances through the system-level approach using the advantages of the material and structural characteristics. For the high energy density with good specific capacity and load carrying capability in structural batteries, nanostructured electrodes were studied with the consideration of woven fabric substrates as a load-bearing function and carbon nanotube coatings having their electrochemically-
inactive characteristics. Also, woven fabric separator was used in this study so that an effective structural battery model can be newly proposed for better understanding of structural batteries, while previous studies have shown only its performance as structural supercapacitors. This new challenging concept of structural batteries enabled the high specific capacity and realistic structural load carrying capability in the unit cell composed of carbon nanotube coated fabric substrates and silica glass fabric separator to the level of practical application of structural batteries.
